The committee outlines the ways federal agencies did not respond to threats.
The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee released a new report last week that detailed ways U.S. intelligence agencies failed to identify the signs of violence leading up to the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.
In the aftermath, both the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) faulted the other agency for the events of that day. The Senate committee’s 105-page report, titled “Planned in Plain Sight,” found that both agencies received concerning information to which they did not adequately respond. For instance, DHS labeled social media posts “online chatter” though they threatened violence, and when the FBI became aware of plans made by the Proud Boys “to literally kill people,” they did not take action.
“These agencies failed to sound the alarm and share critical intelligence information that could have helped law enforcement better prepare for the events [of Jan. 6],” said Senator Gary Peters of Michigan, the chairman of the committee, while issuing the report.
